Top Box Foods Program
A food desert is any area in which residents have difficulty accessing nutritious foods. This designation applies to North Chicago, where there is no local grocery store and prices at the nearest stores may be too high for many residents.
One solution is Top Box Foods, a nonprofit that brings delicious, fresh, healthy food at afforable prices to areas without a grocery store. Shields Township has partnered with Top Box to bring fresh a fresh food truck directly to North Chicago once a month.
- Beautiful fresh fruits and vegetables
- Frozen USDA-Choice beef, chicken, fish, and pork, as well as frozen vegetables
- Frozen, pre-cooked gourmet meals
Anyone may purchase food from Top Box; there is no residency or income requirement. The service features pre-packed boxes of fresh produce and frozen meats at prices up to 40% off of what grocery stores would charge for the same high-quality foods
The Top Box truck will be at the North Chicago Public Library, 2100 Argonne Drive, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm the third Wednesday of every month. No preorder is necessary. Purchases may be made by cash, check, credit card, debit card, or SNAP/LINK card.
