Handicap parking permits
Persons with short-term physical challenges may apply for a 90-day, temporary handicapped parking placard through the township. Applicants must bring a letter from a doctor explaining the need for the placard, or a doctor must certify the form. Forms are available at the Shields Township Office. Phone 847-234-0802 for information.
Permits for longer than 90 days and applications for Persons with Disabilities License Plates are available only from the Illinois Secretary of State. Applications are available at the Township Office.
Pace Bus Dial-a-Ride for seniors and people with disabilities
The township has partnered with Pace to provide Dial-a-Ride service for seniors and disabled persons 16 years of age and older who reside in Shields Township. Registration with the township is required. Once registered, the person may call Pace 24 hours in advance to reserve a ride to anywhere within Shields and to a number of other locations outside Shields Township.
The fare for each trip, one way, is $3. Hours of service are 6 am to 6 pm, Monday through Friday. Please contact the township directly for more information about service destinations, registration, and how to use the Pace reservation system.
Illinois Department on Aging's Benefit Access Program
Seniors and people with disabilities who are enrolled in the Illinois Department on Aging’s Benefit Access program are eligible to ride free on the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra, and Pace fixed-route services. To ride free, you must first qualify and be enrolled in the Illinois Benefit Access program. This program is administered by the Illinois Department on Aging. The program offers three transportation-related benefits:
- Seniors Free Transit Ride
Persons with Disabilities Free Transit Ride
- Secretary of State License Plate Discount
