Help a vet to Independence

A program to help vets to independence was recently started at Shields Township.  After going through various social services and working with employments specialists, veterans living in The Vocational Rehabilitation Unit (VRU) at Lovell VA in North Chicago move into apartments of their own.  Because they have had 3 or more periods of homelessness in the last two years they have little to nothing to stock their new homes.  Local citizens have donated bedroom and living room furniture, TVs, pots, pans and dishes as well as linens to the vets.  It all adds up to help them make a successful transition to independent living.  Said Keenan Brown, a vet recently employed and moving up in the world, I'd love to be successful and then turn around and help somebody else.  That's what this program is all about.

Here are the current needs in good condition:

small kitchen table and chairs

bedroom furniture

pots and pans, 4 person placesettings of dishes and silverware, utensils

shower curtain, bathroom rug and towels

queen or double sized mattress cover, sheets and pillows

queen or double blanket and/or comforter

TVs, coffee maker
